Gun Violence
“The number of deaths from gun violence should erase any doubt that a real epidemic is underway”. In 2016, more than 38,000 Americans died (4,000 deaths more than 2015) and an additional 80,000 were injured in gun violence, according to the centers for Disease control and prevention. “ We must address gun violence as a public health crisis.” For example, some places, such as, massachusetts requires universal background checks: two prohibit gun purchases or possession by anyone with a history of violence, whether it be a felony or a misdemeanor, and provide a mechanism, called red flag law, to address people who are at an extreme risk of committing violence, not only to other people but to themselves. Missouri is another city that practices gun control daily; gun control ( permit-to- purchase law) is often cited by people in favor of stronger gun control. The permit-to-purchase law requires that people get a permit from local law enforcement before purchasing a gun. When Missouri repealed its permit to purchase law in August 2007, research indicated a 55-63% increase in the firearm homicide rate per year, every year the law was repealed. Missouri also passed a stand your ground law. This law allows people to use firearms in cases of self-defense without being charged for injury or homicide and it increased the number of homicides. The science on gun policy has advance slowly since 2004, when a panel of the National Research based for decisions about firearms and violence, the federal government have to support a systematic program of data collection and research the issue that’s causing gun violence.Since that study ,there have been promising signs that the environment for research on gun policy is improving in the United States. In 2018, congress passed an appropriation to fully fund the National Violent Death Reporting systems for the first time. Everyday society is creating ways to silence gun violence. Here’s some examples.
