Mass displacement, conflict, extreme poverty, lack of access to education and job opportunities, violence, and harmful social norm like child marriage are all factors that push individuals into situations of trafficking. Political instability, militarism, civil unrest armed conflict and natural disasters may result in an increase in trafficking. The destabilization and displacement of populations increase their vulnerability to exploitation and abuse through trafficking and forced labor.
The major factors-on both a societal and personal level-that cause or contribute to people
being vulnerable to trafficking includes:
political instability, poverty, racism and the legacy of Colonialism, Addiction, Mental Health
According to the report, the most common form of human trafficking (79%) is sexual exploitation. The victim of sexual exploitation are predominantly women and girls.
Surprisingly, in 30% of the countries which provided information on the gender of traffickers, women make up the largest proportion of traffickers.
In the United States, it is most prevalent in Texas, Florida, New York, and California. Human
trafficking is both a domestic and global crime, with victims trafficked within their own country, to neighboring countries and between continents.
